Teaching Financial Readiness With PEM LIFE (Review)

Disclaimer:  I received a FREE copy of this product through the HOMESCHOOL REVIEW CREW in exchange for my honest review.  I was not required to write a positive review nor was I compensated in any other way.

Never before has it been so important to ensure our children have the skills to be financially stable. My son is doing a unit study project for fellow seniors in high school regarding just that. This is why we were so excited to have the opportunity to review PEM LIFE. They offer a comprehensive financial literacy curriculum called Personal Finance Illustrated® Homeschool Edition. My son was hoping to gain the knowledge he needs to help himself as well as others his age learn financial independence. Here is what we found.

A Little Bit About Personal Finance Illustrated® Homeschool Edition

Personal Finance Illustrated® Homeschool Edition is a curriculum designed for high school age students. PEM LIFE uses the Personal Economic Model to teach youth how to navigate financial decisions. Students can make changes to the model and watch in real time how each decision affects certain outcomes.

Parents have the choice to hands-on or hands-off with this program. If you would like to be involved as your student goes through the curriculum, you can. PEM LIFE provides lesson plans and instructor guides to make it easier for parents. However, this curriculum is customizable, and students can travel through the course as it fits their needs. There are numerous resources included with the curriculum to extend the learning.

How We Used This Product

My son had planned on using this program as a resource for his senior project. He was hoping that the learning would be quick and that he could use what he learned to create some learning videos for his peers. While this curriculum is a wonderful curriculum, it is not what he was hoping for. If you are looking for a comprehensive program that will teach your child financial proficiency, this is a great option.

My son really struggled trying to grasp the plumbing analogy that PEM LIFE uses. The visuals in the program are interactive and colorful. I found them to be quite insightful. However, I think that my son needed a more straightforward approach.

Our Thoughts…

Zach (age 18)

“PEM LIFE is great if you want some personal finance help, because it helps give students a visual of where the money goes. However, it was not what I was looking for. I was looking for something that could help more with budgeting. PEM LIFE does have a budget calculator, but I was looking for a course focused on how to create a simple budget with tips on how to stick to a budget.”

Chris (Mom)

“I really like PEM LIFE and believe that the visuals will help students grasp some of the harder concepts. The program is easy to use, and well organized.”

Review Crew Thoughts…

You don’t have to take our word for this though. Other Review Crew families have also been working hard to bring you a great review. I recommend that you check out all of the Review Crew reviews.
