Build Math Skills With Matific Galaxy (Review)

Do your kids love a good video game, but hate to stop when it’s time to practice their math? I know that in our house it can be a bit of a battle to get my daughter off of her tablet and on to her math studies. That is until we found Matific Galaxy. I have to admit that I was pretty excited to get to review this product, as math is just not a fun subject in our house. For the last several weeks, my daughter has happily agreed to math time because of her math games. Here is what we found…

A Little Bit About Matific Galaxy

Matific Galaxy is a fun and engaging math practice tool. It is set up with a space aliens theme, which is quite appealing for kids in grades K-6. On each visit to the alien world, students are asked to help various alien friends complete missions involving math.

As the child progresses through the program, parents are kept well informed. The parents have their own portal showing their child’s progress as well as any trouble spots. Parents can also set practice goals for their child to meet.

How We Used The Product

First, I would like to mention that my daughter is not the typical Matific Galaxy user. She is in high school, but due to some challenges in her early life, is just now progressing through Kindergarten math. We are always looking for online programs that would appeal to her as a high school student, yet also teach concepts at her level. Please keep that in mind as you read through our post.

My daughter needs daily practice, so we ended up going a little above the recommended three times per week suggested by Matific Galaxy. We do school only four days per week, so she practiced in Matific Galaxy for 30 minutes per day, four days per week.

She likes the games so much, that I would find that if I didn’t watch the time, she would end up working for an hour or more. This was of course not good, so we began setting a timer, and when the timer went off, she was done.

As I mentioned, the program is set up as a game, and just like with most games, each level gets more challenging. In order to get to the more challenging levels, the user must first complete the earlier levels. This is where we ran into a bit of a snag.

There were quite a few games in the various levels that were too difficult for my daughter, and that she may never fully understand. However, in order to progress, she had to complete these items. For these items, I did a lot more helping than I would normally do to help move her along. Most of the games were at her skill level and I did not see anything that would be outside the skill level for most children.

Our Thoughts…

Ruth (age 16)

“I like Matific Galaxy. It has lots of games to play. If one is too hard for me, I go to a different game and come back later.”

Chris (Mom)

“Matific Galaxy is a great tool for math practice. As a parent, you can easily see the skills that your child needs more practice with. I love the fact that the games are fun, as my daughter needs lots of practice. If the games were boring, she would not be as interested in playing.”
