Each book within the series provides a first-person window into a particular period in history. The illustrations are colorful and work well to depict the individual time periods. You will find a glossary at the end of each book, as well as a listing of important people from the time period.
If You Were Me And Lived In…Elizabethan England
As you read this book, you will be transformed into the young child of a local baker. The book provides a first-hand view of what this time period was like for a merchant family. We are introduced to the costumes and culture of the day, as well as important people such as William Shakespeare. Various events that occurred during the Elizabethan era are sprinkled into the story. The author does a wonderful job of incorporating that into the story of the merchant family.
If You Were Me And Lived In…Colonial America
This book takes the reader back 400 years to the American colonies. You will be able to see what it was like for the early settlers and their families. Between the illnesses, the lack of shelter, and the lack of resources, the reader is shown in first-person style what the early days of America were like. We get the chance to see the fashion of the day and other customs alive during this time.
If You Were Me And Lived In…American West
If you like stories of the Old West, this is the book for you! Step into the life of a twelve year old boy travelling with his family to Missouri during the Great Migration. You will leave your East coast home to a new land full of adventures and hard work. Learn to be a cowboy, and what life was like in the early towns of the American West.
Our Family’s Thoughts
These books are a great addition to our homeschool. We also loved getting a peak into the lives of our ancestors. This series makes a great accompaniment to any history curriculum. Currently my boys are learning about the Renaissance, so the Elizabethan England book fit quite well within our studies. Additionally, it provided a fun overview, and opened up fun discussions of how life is today versus 1578. Carole P. Roman is a very talented author, and does a wonderful job of capturing her audience’s attention.
