Weekend Respite

Madison, Wisconsin

Madison, Wisconsin is the perfect weekend getaway.  There are countless things to do, and a good share of the activities are completely free.  My family tries to get to Madison at least once per year.

Some of the wonderful things Madison has to offer include:

  • Wisconsin State Capital Tours
  • Wisconsin Veterans Museum
  • State Street Shops and Resturants
  • Madison Children’s Museum
  • The Taste of Madison
  • The Art Fair on the Square

Bemidji, Minnesota

Bemidji, Minnesota is located near the top of Minnesota, so this destination is really great for those that wish to experience the North Woods.  Pine trees, beautiful lakes and interesting wildlife make Bemidji the perfect place to find respite or immerse yourself in learning.

Things to do in Bemidji include:

  • Hiking or biking along the many trails
  • Walking across the Mississippi River at its mouth
  • Boating or fishing on Lake Itasca
  • Enjoying local folklore like Paul Bunyan and Babe the Blue Ox
  • Learning a new language at the Concordia Language Villages

Sault Ste Marie, Michigan

Sault Ste Marie, Michigan is on the very tip of the Upper Pennisula, and is actually two towns.  The first Sault Ste Marie is in Michigan, while the other is in Ontario, Canada.  This quiet town is home to the famous Soo Locks.  If you have ever wanted to see a big ocean liner up close, the Soo Locks are a real treat.  One of the best things about Sault Ste Marie is the fact that you can actually see Canada from there.

The things awaiting you in Sault Ste Marie include:

  • The Soo Locks
  • Winter Sports
  • Fishing Charters
  • Hiking and Biking
  • The Point Iroquois Lighthouse

Chicago, Illinois

Chicago really needs no introduction, right?  The Windy City really has so much to offer that it could be a week long vacation.  We prefer just a weekend getaway so that each time we visit we can focus in something new.

What does Chicago have to offer?  A lot!  Too much to list in fact, so here are a few highlights:

  • Navy Pier
  • Millennium Park
  • The Cubs, The White Sox and the Bears
  • Live entertainment and fine dining
  • Numerous museums

Chicago Skyline

Twin Cities, Minnesota

The Twin Cities, much like Chicago, needs no introduction either.  It is literally brimming with fun things to do.  My personal favorites are the Science Museum of Minnesota and of course The Mall of America.

Some other awesome things to do in the Twin Cities include:

  • The Twins and the Vikings
  • The Nicollet Mall
  • Live entertainment and fine dining
  • Mississippi National River and Recreation Area

Caledonia, Wisconsin

Caledonia, Wisconsin is a town that could very well be forgotten.  But that would be a shame, because it has so much to offer.  One of the best Jellystone Campgrounds can be found here, and even though it is in between Milwaukee and Chicago, it maintains its rural appeal.

Things to do in Caledonia include:

  • The Jelly Belly Factory tour
  • Horseback riding
  • Hiking, Biking and Fishing
  • Extreme winter sports
