Picky Eaters

As parents, we know that kids need the right balance of vitamins and minerals with lots of healthy foods in their diet.  This way they can grow properly and their bodies can thrive. The trouble is, most kids are incredibly fussy when it comes to food. Whether it’s a phase or an ongoing issue, it can be frustrating and worrying when our little ones won’t eat the things they need. As parents we might need to get creative.

One way is to change up their favorite meals so they contain hidden veggies. Using a food processor, you can finely chop lots of different vegetables and mix this with ground meat. Once it’s served in a dish such as bolognese with the sauce and seasonings added, the taste and texture are almost the same so it’s a great way to sneak things in. Fruit smoothies and frozen smoothie Popsicle are another way to get the good stuff into kids. If your child refuses to eat whole or chopped fruit, blending it with a little juice or water with yogurt.  This creates a sweet drink that just about everyone will sip. Pop any leftovers into Popsicle molds and create tasty homemade ice treats that are full of natural goodness.

Another fantastic way to get children eating healthy is to get them involved. If they have helped to prepare or have some involvement in the cooking process, studies have shown they’re far more likely to eat what they make. It could be something simple like washing a salad, mixing ingredients or stirring a pot under supervision.

Refusing to Brush Their Teeth

If you’ve ever suffered with dental issues, you know that this is something you want to protect your children from. Having cavities drilled and filled is expensive and something that has to be kept on top of all through your life. Teaching good oral hygiene habits from a young age will save them so much pain, money and hassle in adulthood.

There are some things you can do to make your kids want to take care of their teeth.  Create a morning and evening routine that includes brushing their teeth so that it becomes habit.  Try kids toothpaste which comes in milder flavors if it’s the strong mint taste they don’t like. Sometimes if they see the fun characters on the toothpaste, this will motivate them as well. Take them for six monthly checkups at a kids dentist who will be able to keep an eye out for any issues. That way they can be spotted and sorted early before any major or long term damage is done.

Kids That Hate Bedtime

Bedtime is frustrating as a child.  Kids want to have fun and play and stay up with their parents or older siblings. Instead your child is being told he or she has to sleep. Routine is key here, stick to it rigidly so your child knows what will be happening every night and that there’s no way around things. Find out how much sleep your child needs.  Then set their bedtime based on that- leaving time to read a bedtime story and giving them time to drift off. Avoid things like phones and tablets in the hour before sleep, as these can affect the brain chemistry involved in sleepiness and shutting down. Instead, come up with quiet activities they can do which will help them to wind down. Reading, coloring, making up stories together- these can all be fun bonding activities.
