Mother Daughter Time With Beloved: 365 Devotions for Young Women (Review)

These days it seems that there is never enough time to just connect with our kids.  I know that between this blog, homeschool, the house, and my other duties, time is very precious.  Experts recommend spending at least 10 minutes a day in quality time with each of your children.  That is why when I heard of the Beloved: 365 Devotions for Young Women by Zondervan, I was excited to get the opportunity to be part of the Review Crew reviews.   Here is what we found…

A Little Bit About the Beloved: 365 Devotions for Young Women

This is a nice sized hard cover book decorated beautifully with flowers and foil lettering.  It even has a matching ribbon bookmark so you can easily keep your place.  The book is designed so that a young woman can go through the it entirely in one calendar year.  Ideally, this would be done with a trusted woman in the girl’s life, as there are topics that will bring up great discussion.

Beloved: 365 Devotions for Young Women

Each devotion begins with a particular Bible verse.  The verses are not completely in Biblical order, and are instead ordered more by topic.  Along with each verse, there is a paragraph or two discussing the verse.  These are great to get you thinking, as they bring the verses into the 21st Century with questions and discussion relative to what our young women face today.

Some of the themes covered in the devotional include:

  • The Power of Women

  • God’s Ideal Woman

  • Sin and Forgiveness

  • God’s View of Women

  • And much more…

A Little Bit About How We Used The Product

When I first heard of this devotional, I had images of my teenage daughter and I sipping on fun drinks at a local coffee shop while reading, laughing and discussing the topics at hand.  I used to take my son to the coffee shop on Saturday mornings for fun sodas and big cookies when his big brothers were off with their dad.  We used to talk, laugh and have a wonderful time.  This is something I truly want with my daughter, and this devotional seemed like a great idea.

Time goes fast, and during the holidays time seems to go even faster.  So, even though we haven’t yet had the coffee shop date, we have enjoyed working through the devotions together.  My daughter has some special needs and is still working on her language barrier, so some of the concepts are too advanced for her.  But, she is girl on fire for God, and so I do my best to help her understand.

This is something we have incorporated into her school day.  I have to admit that we skip the weekends and double up on days during the week.  Weekends are pretty hectic around our house, so we tend to get much better focus when it is part of the school day.

I was a little skeptical when we first got started, as the devotional begins to talk about “a wife of noble character” and then does not go on to explain.  Or so I thought.  The very next day we began discussing exactly what that phrase means, so I was much happier.  In fact, we spent four days on this subject alone.

My daughter’s favorite devotional so far is Day 27 Genesis 17:15-16.  These verses tell the story of how Sarah got her name.  God found favor in her and changed her name from Sarai to Sarah.  This resounded with my daughter as she could relate to having her name changed when she became part of our family.  It was like her name change marked her becoming a daughter.

Our Thoughts…

Ruth (age 15)

“I like reading with mom.”

Chris (mom)

“This has been a great addition to our homeschool days.  I find that it can be difficult to find devotional time.  Having this time with my daughter has really helped me make that a priority.”
