Do you have a budding programmer in your house? Maybe you would like to help prepare your child for working in the future. My son has developed a love of all things coding and computers over the last few years. He was really excited when we were given the opportunity to review Python for Beginners: Learn Coding at Home from Homeschool Code Academy. Here is what we found…

A Little Bit About Homeschool Code Academy

Designed by a fellow homeschool parent, Homeschool Code Academy knows the ropes of home education. They get that life sometimes gets in the way of homeschooling, and so all of the lessons are set at your child’s pace and can be reviewed as many times as necessary. With something this hands-on, it is nice to be able to go back and review past lessons.

Even though there is no teacher sitting in the room with your child, the videos are designed to work right along side your child. This gives Homeschool Code Academy the feel of a private tutor. If you are like me, and your coding knowledge is quite limited, it is nice to know that Homeschool Code Academy really supplies your child with everything he or she needs to be successful.

A Little Bit About Python for Beginners: Learning Coding at Home

Python for Beginners: Learning Code at Home works to make students feel successful from the beginning. Each lesson includes a video that walks students through the material. Students then get the opportunity to actually code the same things being taught in the lesson. Your student will need to download a free text editor called Thonny in order to do the hands-on work. However, since this is an open source program, your child can continue to code even when he or she is finished with the course.

How We Used This Product

My son used this as a supplement to his regular school schedule. There were quite a few weeks that this is how he spent is Saturday and Sunday afternoons. If your child wants to learn coding just for fun, this program will work great for that too! However, we are using this program to help my son complete his self-created unit study surrounding coding his own website.

So far, my son has learned how to make an interactive Mad Lib style game. Through that activity, he was introduced to variables, math operators, the print () and input () function, making the computer speak, hardware and software, etc. I have been quite impressed with how fast he has been able to learn Python using this course. He is excited to sit down with it, and in just a couple of hours a week, as really been able to do a lot.

Below, you can see a video of my son’s word game.

Our Thoughts…

Seth (age 14)

“I really enjoyed going through Homeschool Code Academy’s Python for Beginners: Learning Coding at Home. My favorite part of this course, was making a simple word game similar to Mad Libs. I think that the course is well done including the video quality and the voice over. If the narrator could be a little bit more personable, that would be my only suggestion for improvement.”

Chris (Mom)

“I would recommend Homeschool Code Academy to anyone wanting to learn Python. It is simple to use, straightforward, and keeps a good pace. students are rewarded right away with seeing the fruits of their learning, which helps to keep them motivated.”
