With everything that is going on in the world right now, more people than ever are using their backyards to partially sustain their families. One piece to this is growing a garden and storing the produce. I know too well that there is only so much room in the freezer, and so many people are choosing to can or ferment their produce so that it keeps longer. If you have thought about getting into fermenting, you might enjoy the Starter Kit from Fermentools. We were recently picked to review this product, and here is what we found…
A Little Bit About Fermentools and the Starter Kit
Fermentools is a family owned business based in the United States. This is actually unique, as most other ferment companies are outside the United States. For those of us living here in America, this can make getting replacement parts or additional items much easier. If you are new to fermenting, you will enjoy the blog that contains numerous tips and recipes to get you started.
The Starter Kit contains everything you need to get started, and each item is made of quality materials that should last a long time. You may even find that this is something that you could hand down through the family. The Starter Kit contains all of the following items:
- Stainless steel lid which is corrosion resistant
- Glass fermentation weight
- Air Lock
- Two rubber stoppers – one of these has a hole for the weight.
- Rubber gasket.
- Himalayan powdered salt
- Instruction guide
- Not Included (Wide Mouth Mason Jars made for fermenting)
How We Used This Product
My son is currently doing a unit study on tea. Since he is interested in the Japanese culture, he thought making Kombucha Tea would be fun. He was pretty happy that we were picked to review the Starter Kit from Fermentools, as he thought he would make Kombucha.
As he learned about fermented teas, he discovered that he was much more interested in a drink called Pineapple Tepache. This is a sweet drink that is very popular in Mexico. He has attempted this process twice now. The first time it did not really work out so well. He left the ferment in the jar too long and it smelled very badly. Needless to say, we did not try that batch.
His second batch he used a different recipe and only allowed the drink to ferment for two days. This time the ferment worked quite well. Pineapple Tepache is an interesting drink. It is very sweet, and also just slightly carbonated. Although it was too sweet for our liking, my son is now more confident to try Kombucha Tea.
How Does The Fermenting Process Work?
The fermenting process is quite easy. You take what you want to ferment, and place it in a mason jar following the directions of the recipe. Then place the glass weight on top of the contents in your jar to keep it from floating. After that you place the rubber ring around the top of the mason jar, put the stainless steel lid on top of that, and put the rubber stopper in the hole in the lid. Fill the air lock half way with non-chlorinated water, and then place the air lock into the rubber stopper.
After you have completed these steps, place the jar in a dry dark place for the appointed amount of time based upon your recipe. Please note that when making fermented drinks, after a few days, they begin to become alcoholic. Typically 2-3 days is all you will want to ferment your drinks if you are not looking to make an adult beverage. If you want to make various types of vinegar, let your recipe ferment for even longer.
As fall approaches, we will be doing more fermenting to help preserve the produce from our garden. It may even be fun to make our own saurkraut to help celebrate Oktoberfest. Since you can only ferment one jar at a time, we will be purchasing more kits so we can be fermenting more items at once.

“I really enjoyed using this product as it is made of high quality materials. The glass weight that comes with the fermenting tools perfect fit the wide mouth mason jars. This is very easy to use. I would recommend fermenting foods to others, but some fermented foods are an aquired taste.”
“The Starter Kit is really great! It is simple to use, and seems to be a much more safe way to ferment foods. It seems that if the fermentation process goes wrong, you can actually create Botulism. This was a scarey thought to me, so I was really glad to see how well made the kit items are. I am really looking forward to the fall when we can try even more recipes.”
