A Little Bit About Beyond the Stick Figure Art School

Beyond the Stick Figure Art School is the creation of Sally Stansfield. She developed the online Art School, because she wanted to share her passion of art not only with those that have a gift, but with anyone that desires to learn. With this in mind, her courses are broken down into tiny increments, making it much easier for beginners to follow along.

With Beyond the Stick Figure Complete Drawing Course PLUS Three Bonus Courses, students are provided short videos walking them through a very simple drawing concept. Each video is less than 10 minutes in length, and some are just over a minute. Your student will learn the simplest of techniques, and then practice those techniques. As you progress, you will begin to take the simpler things you have learned, and incorporate them into more complex drawings.

The bonus courses that come with Beyond the Stick Figure Complete Drawing Course are: Watercolor, Acrylic, and 3D Design. These courses are set up very similarly to Beyond the Stick Figure, but they cover different mediums and types of art.

Please note that all of the courses require various tools such as markers or paper. The first lesson of each course tells you what you will need, so before you start the course, check out the supply list. We didn’t do this, and it delayed getting started.

A Little Bit About How We Used This Product

My son used the program about twice per week, but he could have gone much faster through the lessons as they are very short. After a few lessons, he did start to become frustrated, as he really was expecting to draw actual pictures. Instead, it seems that the lessons focus on basic shapes and lines. Since he a junior in high school, and this is not his first art class, he felt like this was too slow of a pace for him.

He did use the concepts he learned and incorporated them into his drawings. However, he feels like this course if for a much younger audience such as Kindergarten or early elementary. While he understands that we all need to learn to crawl before we can learn to walk, the speed of the course could be much faster.

With that being said, the course is self-paced. If you want a faster pace, you can skip lessons or complete several lessons in one session. That is one of the things he really likes about this program.

We had some technical difficulties where we could not log in to the course. They were fast to fix it, but it meant that he had to have a new account. He could simply skip the lessons he had completed already, which was nice. Skipping a lesson is easy. Just click the “mark complete” button at the bottom right of the screen.

Our Thoughts…

Zach (age 17)

“I think that this is good for kids who are starting to like art, probably elementary age students. This way the course can help them with their art. But, for older students, this is too basic. The quality of this course is great, and the lessons are set up nicely and are easy to follow.”

Chris (mom)

“I am not an artist by any stretch of the word. While my son thought this course was too basic, it is exactly the speed that I need to get me drawing anything. If I had to say who this is for, I would say the very basic learner. No matter your age, this course is for the beginner. And the nice thing, is that you also get three bonus courses, so you can expand your learning which is nice.”

  1. Thank you for the review. We love to make our students happy, so here are some tweaks we have made based on recent reviews:
    1. All course videos are open and do not require sequential completion–although we still recommend it.
    2. We contacted Vimeo and they have improved the video experience by installing volume control and full screen options on all videos.
    3. We added more options to drawing part 2 to help it move along more quickly for younger students.
