A Little Bit About Hewitt Homeschooling Resources
Hewitt Homeschooling Resources was founded in 1963/64 in response to changes being made to the education systems during that time. Today, they are dedicated in helping students be well educated in academics as well develop skills outside of academia such as character development and creating a good work ethic.
A Little Bit About The Joy of Discovery- How To Teach With Unit Studies
While a good homeschool definitely thrives on great curriculum, sometimes you need to go outside the boxed curriculum. Bringing your kids’ interests to life motivates them to learn. Joy of Discovery – How To Teach With Unit Studies helps moms, dads and other educators build solid unit studies around the interests of their child/ student. A wise person once wrote,
“Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing it is stupid.”
Since not every child learns by the same method, isn’t it convenient to be able to match the learning to your child?
With Barbara Wagner’s book, you can begin to create learning that matches your child’s interests. She will even teach you how to let your child be the leader of their own learning. With step-by-step instruction, you will be given the tools you need right down to the minute details.
Based in Sound Instructional Design Principles
I am a certified instructional designer, and so I am pleased to inform you that everything in the book is rooted in sound instructional design theories. The great news is that you do not need to be an instructional designer or a trained educator to find this book useful. It is written with the common mom or dad in mind.
Written by a Homeschool Mom
It is easy to see that Wagner is a true homeschool mom who knows the world of homeschooling. She shares ideas on how to make one study that will work for multiple age groups and skills. Because she actually is a homeschool mom, she also provides many personal experiences. It is nice to see how she works through her studies to help me create my own. Additionally, she provides great ideas to get you started.
Easy to Use Format
The book is set up sort of like a workbook. It has worksheets to complete and hands-on tools to help you along the way. There are numerous pictures for the visual learner and hands-on activities for the kinesthetic learner. Each page within the book is removable so that you can make copies of the activity pages and reuse them for new studies. She really has thought of everything.
My Thoughts On This Product…
“I loved the sound instructional design principles, as well as the learning objectives. The examples and tools are also very relevant. It can be difficult to find ways to make what kids are doing at home match real learning objectives. She shows her readers how to do this, and this is really helpful.
In one of her examples, she talks about how her child related what he had been learning that day at the dinner table. This met an objective of discussion about the subject matter, and it did not have to happen during “school hours.” It was a great reminder that if I watch closely, I can find my children meeting their educational objectives even during routine family activities.”
