Do your kids love to dive really deep into a book? I know that mine surely do! That is one of the reasons we were really glad to be picked to review another title from YWAM Publishing. Since my son is studying about the Holocaust, we decided to review Christian Heroes: Then & Now Corrie Ten Boom. Here is what we found…
A Little Bit About Christian Heroes: Then and Now and Heroes of History
Christian Heroes: Then and Now is a series of 47 books available from YWAM Publishing. Each title within this series recounts the life of a real-life Christian hero. For those that like to dive into a great story, there are study guides that partner with each book. These are quite comprehensive, and could be used to either enhance a base curriculum or act as a stand-alone unit study.
In the past, we have had the opportunity to review books from the other series in this review, Heroes of History. If you would like to see more about books within this series, there is a link to the other reviews at the end of this post. These are well-written books about famous people in history. Each book in this series also has a study guide to accompany it. To see our review of Heroes of History: William Bradford, click the link below.
A Little Bit About Corrie Ten Boom
Corrie Ten Boom is a great example of courage and strength in the face of immense opposition. If you have a child that sometimes feels like the “odd duck,” have them read Corrie Ten Boom, and they might just feel like a swan. Ten Boom is seen so often being the “odd duck,” going against social norms to help those around her.
Corrie Ten Boom has many accomplishments that would be seen as odd in her time. She was the first woman to be licensed as a watchmaker in Holland. She did this to help her father more effectively run his business. Ten Boom also worked to help the Jews during World War II. It is estimated that she saved over 800 Jews between 1943 and her capture by the Gestapo.
Corrie Ten Boom began a worldwide ministry. She visited more than 60 countries worldwide, and told her story. Ten Boom did so many more wonderful things, but you will have to read the book for yourself to learn about them.
How We Used The Product
My son has been learning about World War II and the holocaust, so he decided he wanted to learn more about Corrie Ten Boom. As part of his current language and social studies curriculum, he needed to write a biography of a famous person living during World War II. He decided on Corrie Ten Boom.
Each morning, he reads a book in the car as we do our morning drop-offs. He typically reads for about 30-45 minutes, taking notes as he goes. After each chapter, he completed the questions included in the study guide. These questions brought up some great discussions.
He then used this information to help in writing his biography. In the back of the study guide, he found a list of resources that came in very handy as he did his research. One thing he found interesting, is that this is one of the books our local library has on Corrie Ten Boom. It really increased his confidence in the information and quality of this book.
During the summer, he would really like to try some of the hands-on activities suggested in the study guide, such as the foods and the language learning. He loves other countries and learning languages, so he really liked that this was included. Because he was focused on writing his paper, we also did not get the opportunity to do any of the social studies related activities. We will also work on those this summer, and we just may visit the Illinois Holocaust Museum as part of our Chicago vacation.
Seth (age 13)
“There are so many good things about this book. I think that the authors did a very good job bringing emotion into the book. You should read this book, because it goes into detail of the incredible life of Corrie Ten Boom. My favorite part in this book was when Corrie and her sister Betsy would give other prisoners hope about their future.”
“These books are very well written, easy to read, and come with a complimentary study guide. You really can’t ask for more. I really love how the books spark additional learning. This also sparked my son’s interest in a Bible study in his youth group.”
